Message from the Rector

The Rector of the seminary is the Fr Brian Coyle.

Welcome to St John’s Seminary Website. I hope you will find here everything you need to know about the seminary. Please let us know if there is other content it would be useful to include here.

St John’s has been serving the Church in England and Wales for well over 125 years, not only in the formation of men for the diocesan priesthood and permanent diaconate, but also in helping to form lay people for their particular mission, opening our doors to groups, young and old, by providing a suitable venue for days of recollection, prayer, study and spiritual development.

However, our principal work is the formation of students for service in the secular priesthood in the dioceses of the South of England and Wales. We currently draw candidates from around nine dioceses and our student body, numbering around thirty, ranges in age from the early twenties to the sixties.

Students who think they may have a vocation to the priesthood should first contact their parish priest or Diocesan Director of Vocations to talk things over. The seminary hosts a couple of days of discernment and reflection each year for men who would like to find out more about the priesthood and seminary life. Once again, please contact your Vocations Director for more information; links to their Dioceses are on the Links page.

I hope you enjoy your tour around our website and learning more of who we are and what we do. Please keep us and our work in your prayers.
